Africa e Mediterraneo is a no-profit association whose aim is to pursue activities related to international co-operation and intercultural projects. Since 1997, the Association, which was legally constituted in 2002, has been operating in order to foster the education to development and intercultural exchange, particularly between Italy and Africa. Africa e Mediterraneo commitment is based on the belief that Culture is a means to development, peace and justice. The Africa e Mediterraneo Association achieves its purposes through the publication of the Africa e Mediterraneo review (published by Edizioni Lai-momo) and the organisation of cultural events (exhibitions, conferences and publications) that focus on the work of contemporary African artists.
Another important issue for us is mass communication, meant both as the set of technologies necessary to transmit and receive information (with their economic, social and cultural facets) and as the set of values, symbols and representations at the basis of mass democracy. All that helps the community to represent itself, to establish social relationships and to take an active part in the world is regarded as an important tool for mutual knowledge.
Africa e Mediterraneo Association pays a special attention to African comics. It strongly believes that African comics have a high artistic value and are a significant mean to promote the knowledge of the immigrants’ countries.
The Association’s activities are:
1- promotion of the quarterly review Africa e Mediterraneo;
2- realisation of exhibitions about African cultural expressions;
3- realisation of projects concerning cultural cooperation and the respect of human rights;
4- realisation of projects concerning interculture and development education, also on an international level;
5- organisation of update courses and meetings for teachers.
The journal: Africa e Mediterraneo is an interdisciplinary journal of African cultural studies, published three times a year in Fall, Winter, and Spring by Edizioni Lai-momo. In 10 years of existence, Africa e Mediterraneo has established itself as a field-defining cultural studies journal. Moving from an anthropologically-oriented editorial policy, Africa e Mediterraneo seeks a critical understanding of the global cultural flows and cultural forms which have been characterising Africa in the late decades. As such, cultural and social differences emerge as public phenomena which are present everywhere, from highly localised cultural events to global information networks. In the pages of Africa e Mediterraneo, international artists and well-established scholars of fine arts and social sciences present some of their most innovative and up-dated works.
