Call for Papers : Cinema Other
Cinema Other is an online film journal of world cinema, which strives to cultivate the discussion of underrepresented films, directors and topics. The inaugural issue of Cinema Other tackles with Tunisian Cinema and its impact on world cinema. Does the Cinema of Tunisia, when re-examined under the light of the post-revolutionary era, reveal to us traces that led to the popular uprising, which broke out in Sidi Bouzid and spread across the country? With that broad question in mind, the Cinema of Tunisia, as a locus of Islam, Arabness, and modernity should once more be contemplated, together with the new developments in the socio-political scene of the country.
What do directors like Nouri Bouzid, Nacer Khemir, Ferid Boughedir and many more tell us about the culture and politics of Tunisia? Are the imaginary borders of a nation confining and misleading to the study of these films? Which films and directors diverge from the normative representation of Tunisianness in mainstream media, and history and how? How have pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary films challenged the political state apparatuses? What are the cultural and artistic tools of that struggle? While looking for answers to these questions, we would like you to reveal and discuss the historical, social, and cultural elements that contributed to the formation of Tunisian Cinema.
We invite submissions that deal with the cinema of Tunisia and its uniqueness with a new perspective on similar topics in question.
