European Association for Viewers Interests (EAVI) is an independent, not-for-profit international civil society organisation registered in Brussels as an AISBL – Association International Sans But Lucratif. The mission of EAVI is to serve public interest in the fields of media. Its primary aim is to represent and advance the interests of European media users and citizens in general. EAVI is pleased to announce that its final report on the study Testing and Refining Criteria to Assess Media Literacy Levels in Europe has now been approved by the European Commission.

This is the third European-wide study on Media Literacy that EAVI has been involved in on behalf of the European Commission and covers the 27 EU Member States. The current report has been completed in cooperation with the Danish Technological Institute and, for technical and statistical aspects, the Oxford Internet Institute. It builds on the 2009 study on Assessment Criteria for Media Literacy Levels by adopting a more practical approach.

The main goal has been to validate the criteria detected in the previous study and to offer refinement and statistical validation on the media literacy levels of European citizens. Covering age groups between 16 and 74, the report has come up with a tool that measures media literacy levels across ages, education levels, access levels and geographic locations.
