Television channels should improve the quality of their educational content, officials of four organisations said yesterday.
They were speaking at a session on Perspectives for the media in 21st century education , part of the
World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE).
The panel comprised president of the Russian Association of Film and Media Education, Dr Alexander Fedorov, executive director of Learning Media division of NHK Educational Corp (Japan), Yohihiko Hibi, controller of languages of the BBC s
Global News, Liliane Landor, and director of news and programmes of Euronews (France), Lucian Sarb.
The four speakers acknowledged that there was a need to improve educational content.
Landor said her news network had developed many educational programmes which had won a large following.
Fedorov felt that while there had been a marked improvement in Russian educational programmes, the media needed to do
a lot more to appeal to young viewers.
Sarb said there was no doubt that channels were playing an effective role in disseminating news.  However, there needs to
be regular updating of content so that there could be more viewers among the younger generation.
Hibi said tie-ups between channels of two or more countries would contribute to developing quality content. He cited the example of his channel’s alliance with Qatar’s Al Jazeera Children’s Channel in producing quality education programmes.
Veteran British journalist Richard Lindley, who moderated the session, said the media had a major role to play in the advancement of global education.
