The No. 1, 2010 issue of European Media Policy provides a summary and analysis of some of the main topics discussed recently:
– After heavy pressure from the European Parliament and months of increased public outcry against the secrecy of the negotiations on a multilateral Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) – which also aims to combat piracy – a Consolidated Consolidated Text Prepared for Public Release was published on 21 April.
– In March the EU Commission adopted Europe 2020, a long-term strategy to lift the Union out of recession. One of its key initiatives is the European Digital Agenda, aimed at delivering sustainable economic and social benefits from a Digital Single Market by capitalising on the potential of information technology to create jobs and boost economic growth.
– In January the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly adopted a Recommendation urging the Committee of Ministers to take various measures to guarantee greater respect for media freedom and the safety of journalists in the member states, focusing in particular on countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Turkey.
