Media literacy is another issue which received much attention during the past year. The interest in this subject seems partly to be linked to growing concerns about illegal downloading. The appeal of media education in this context is probably that it constitutes not only a complement to law enforcement but also a softer, less controversial tool.
In August the European Commission presented a Recommendation on the subject. Here the Commission calls on the EU Member States to promote media literacy across Europe through activities that help people access, understand and critically evaluate all media they are exposed to.
