The MOOC DIY MIL (Do It Yourself Media Education and Information Literacy) is a massive open online course, underpinned by the social media and offered by the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle/Sorbonne-Paris-Cité on an OPENMOOC platform within the framework of the European ECO project (E-learning, Communication, Open data). Media Education and Information Literacy is enhanced by digital technology; its most important purpose, – furthering media understanding and critical thinking-, is compounded by another one, the construction of personal identity, because the new technologies transform individuals into potential media, with new abilities on the level of personal expression and creativity but also with traces that are left in the form of data. Media Education and Information Literacy inside and outside the school system is an essential link for developing citizens who are able to take informed decisions, even in situations where conflict resolution is required. One of the objectives of the MOOC DIY MIL is to create awareness of MIL’s new context and the related issues of citizenship and creativity. The MOOC DIY MIL is intended to offer reflection tools and keys for teachers, educational staff working in and around schools and those who are interested in MIL. It is addressed to all those who wish to implement a MIL project within their own context and want to know the different parameters. It aims to stimulate conversation between different communities of practice in order to facilitate exchanges, recommendations and personal or group initiatives, over and above the platform space. Built around 8 sessions, the DIY MIL’s special feature is that it combines theoretical approaches of Media Education and Information Literacy developed by researchers with the practical application by teachers. Divina Frau-Meigs, researcher and media sociologist, and Bérangère Blondeau, teacher and MIL doctoral researcher, have created and developed the « DIY MIL» concept which, by means of a very pragmatic approach makes the understanding of MIL and its implementation clear, simple and feasible, especially within the context of the framework act for the rebuilding process of the École de la République (the French education system).
