This paper examines the contribution of Irish community radio to media literacy. Media literacy aspects of access to media, understanding and production of media is looked through the case-studies of three Irish community radio stations and through gathering information from experts and practitioners in the fields of community radio and media
literacy. The theoretical perspective in this paper carries out not only academic literature review but also legislation and regulation policies in community radio sector and media literacy. The findings illustrate the significant contribution of community radio in Ireland to promotion and practice of media literacy and also outline the challenges and difficulties of this contribution. The role of the Community Radio Forum in Ireland and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland is also addressed in this paper.
