There is another way children and youth are
present in the media in Asia. Fr. Jose Palakeel,
an Indian specialist in communication theology,
considers the technological media revolution
in which children and young people play an
important part. The role of media education
in Asia is illustrated by two articles: the first
examines the way young Catholic Cambodians
study media and the second is a report of the
September 2008 SIGNIS-Asia meeting which
focussed on children in the media in the
continent. At this meeting also special media
awards were presented.
Media play an important role in human rights
issues as was seen at the international Asian
Congress for Media and Communication held
in the Philippines. Some Asian regimes are still
controlling the media, sometimes under the
pretext of protecting children. Finally, for the
Asian bishops it is a priority to be present in
the media to serve the community better.
