After the independence of Pakistan, no opportunities were available of proper
training or education for the journalists. Those who started newspapers or joined the
profession possessed the missionary spirit and few of them were acquired with formal or
informed education or expertise in one field or the other. They happened to know the
technicalities of journalism with passage of time through trial and error process. As per
recommendation of Pakistan Press Commission, Journalism departments were established
in different universities and departments already offering diploma courses upgraded to
Master degrees. Thousands of students had acquired master degree in journalism or Mass
Communication but a very few number of smart young journalists having masters degree
succeeded to get jobs in the newspapers, but editors were not usually satisfied with the
abilities of such new entrants because these departments did not have adequate facilities of
practical know-how due to their meager resources. This paper is an attempt to know the
perception of media professionals regarding education and training facilities for media
graduates and to find out ways & means as how media graduates may be equipped with
more training to full fill the requirement of the media industry.
