The news media continue to play a crucial role in the shaping of public opinion. In this module the news reports – from the newspapers’ article to the newscast – are understood as as particular ‘representations have been designed primarily as a special ‘ representations of reality’ socially constructed through specific practices of journalistic production. In the analysis section of the module the first two units dwell on the relationship between ‘ journalistic representations ‘ and ‘ interpretations of reality ‘ (or worldviews) and then on the stereotyping techniques more employed in the news reports . The other three units of the first section focus on the identification and deconstruction of stereotypes regarding gender , ethnicity, race and disability in the news items. The media production section revolves around the so called participatory journalism, and specifically on the techniques and the practices of collaborative production and pluralistic/inclusive representation of social reality through the use of digital media.
