While female directors remain a solid minority in the feature film industry, they are making progress in breaking down barriers, Laura Hertzfeld, who points to recent Sundance Institute statistics showing that of the top 100 box office grossing films from 2002 to 2012, just 4.4% of directors for these films were female. The number of female-directed films in mainstream Hollywood remains severely limited, but the independent film industry is seeing more women than ever at the helm, Hertzfeld writes.
