Human rights defenders from India to Illinois have told us archiving is one of their biggest challenges. So, we’re launching the Activists’ Guide To Archiving Video to help them.
A Syrian group has over 160,000 videos of human rights abuses. Imagine trying to find footage of a specific massacre or war crime from this collection or how much of it could be lost if their storage system fails.
Our new guide is a practical resource to help activists manage, store, share, and preserve their digital video.
Filmmaker Pamela Yates knows the true value of archiving. Thirty years ago she made a documentary about the genocide of Mayan communities in Guatemala. In preproduction for a new documentary, she rediscovered a 1982 interview with General Rios Montt, which proved valuable in convincing a judge that he should be arrested and indicted for genocide.
We want to ensure that the Syrian activists can also use their videos to achieve justice and accountability for their future. We hope that the Activists’ Guide to Archiving Video can help them – and brave activists around the world – do just that.
