Y-FI Africa’s goal is to introduce digital filmmaking clubs into high schools in Kenya and throughout Africa as an extra-curricular activity.
The film industry in Kenya and Africa at large continues to experience tremendous growth. Question is; how do we prepare our youth to take up the opportunities that the growth will bring along?
With limited investment in film education, the y-fi clubs will present an avenue where students can acquire and develop skills in filmmaking. Imagine a student who joins the club in Form one; by the end of their four years in high school, they’ll have had th opportunity to work on no less than 10 short films, taking on different roles including director, camera-person, editor and so on.
With such a portfolio, the student is empowered. They’ll have the confidence and skills to start their own small business or even seek employment in the film industry not to mention a clear understanding of the path to take should they choose higher education.
In film, the students will also find a tool of self expression. Through film, their voice on on a range of social issues will be heard.
