“Media Literacy: Everyday we’re bombarded with messages from different places: newspapers, television, radio, movies, magazines, billboards, even from our mail. This is why it’s important to be active when using these media by analyzing the meanings behind the messages before accepting them.
At Understand Media, we believe that media literacy is a vital skill for citizens of the 21st century. We proudly provide free resources to help parents and teachers help kids learn the importance of this valuable skill. We offer free articles, lesson plans, podcasts, a blog, videos, and much more to help you on your way.
Education and Technology: We believe that computers have changed the world. Technologies like Web 2.0 have changed the way we create and use information. Kids are quickly becoming a part of this phenomenon, and teachers and parents need to know how to leverage these technologies to better educate students.
At Understand Media, we’re at the forefront of using technology to help teach media literacy. Our founder has produced videos and is writing a book on the subject. The technologies are already in place – kids use computers and own MP3 players – so why not use this to their advantage and teach them how to become better learners?
A World of Experience for Everyone: We strongly believe in bringing important resources to those who need them most. This is why we are strong believers of work aimed towards minority communities and non-native English speakers. We work with teachers and schools worldwide to provide resources that are useful and relevant to students. We do this, because everyone deserves the benefits of a media literacy education. Most importantly, all of the resources by Understand Media are provided at no cost.
We’re also very firm believers in helping to advance education causes around the world. So we donate 10% of all our proceeds to organizations like UNICEF and UNESCO. We believe this will help children around the world achieve to their fullest potential, leading to a brighter tomorrow for everyone” (Retrieved on August 12, 2008 from http://www.understandmedia.com/index.html).
