Media Education Center is a leading Armenian NGO promoting media literacy education in Armenia. Our mission is to educate children and parents, youths and teachers to become media literate citizens of an inclusive knowledge society. We seek to empower citizens to make responsible choices while dealing with old and new media. Our aim is to highlight them how to use Internet and other ICTs positively, responsibly and safely in order to become active citizens and creative producers of their own media. Goals and objectives
Promote media and information literacy in Armenia;
Promote usage of media to foster democratic communication, civic and cultural participation;
Promote human rights and citizenship education via media education;
Promote introduction of media and ICTs in education, including innovative pedagogy, new learning environments; usage of new media to enrich contextual learning, cooperative learning and production, blended learning, innovative and life-long learning.
Media Education and Citizenship
Speaking for Myself project is aimed to facilitate children’s participation in decision making and advocacy from local to international platforms and across different media forms. Children gain experience about grassroots democracy, active citizenship and conflict resolution, they participate in hands-on trainings in media and Internet literacy, public speaking, advocacy campaigning, disability rights. The action includes children with disabilities as they are often marginalized in mainstream activities.
Media Education Center offers Media and Internet Literacy trainings for teachers and students of secondary schools. Trainees learn how to access sources, interact, search, use WEB-2 networks and homepages. Media trainings focusing on journalism, digital photography, writing, filming, self-editing, radio and television are designed to help children gain essential knowledge and skills to speak for themselves, protect and promote their rights. School Councils can voice their opinions and write stories on a unified multi-user blogging platform.
Media Education Center offers curricular materials for teaching media literacy, news reporting, film making in secondary and high schools, as well as effective methodologies how to introduce new media and ICTs into teaching and learning process.
Media Education & Internet Safety
Media Education Center works towards improving citizens’ safety in relation to digital media, raising awareness about on-line risks and promoting the protection and education of children using the Internet and new online technologies.
Safe.AM, a joint initiative of Media Education Center, ISOC AM and Orange Armenia is aimed to empower citizens to use the Internet and mobile technologies safely and avoid risks. Safe.AM promotes nation-wide networking in the area of Internet safety and actively cooperates with partners in European countries: INSAFE and eNACSO.
Safe.AM provides information about e-safety issues and informs about risks, offers teaching materials on safe use of the Internet and mobile technologies for school children, teachers and parents. Safe.AM runs nation-wide information campaigns, competitions, surveys and polls, round tables and other media events, such as the 45-minute-radio program “Corner of Harry Potter” for teenagers. Safe.AM provides schools with the Internet Safety Zone: an extensive list of educational web-resources, which are interesting, informative, age-appropriate, and free of offensive or commercial content. Safe.AM runs Armenian Hotline to report incidents on the Internet
