On the 10th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child – at a meeting in Oslo in November 1999 organized by the Norwegian Government and UNICEF – children, young people, media professionals and child rights experts met to discuss the development of children’s rights and their relation to the media throughout the world.
From this meeting, the Oslo Challenge was formed which encourages children, government, parents, and teachers alike to understand their role as individuals and groups in creating and using media in positive ways that facilitate creativity and learning.
MAGIC is a UNICEF organization that was created with these concepts of the Oslo Challenge in mind. Through MAGIC, children are able to share their ideas about current events, discuss favorite television shows, websites, and movies. They also get linked to other related sites, and can read thoughts from other children around the world. Links tailored to parents, teachers, and government officials are also provided, which can assist them is fulfilling their goals as set by the Oslo Challenge.
